About Hands-Only CPR

What is Hands-Only CPR?

Hands-Only CPR

Hands-only CPR - also known as compression-only CPR - is CPR without rescue breaths.

The simple 2-step process is easy to learn and remember:

If you see a teen or adult collapse,

  1. Call 911, and

  2. Push hard and fast (at about 100-120 beats per minute)

Use our fun “Ultimate CPR Song List” to help you stay on beat.

Okay, got it. So, what is traditional CPR?

CPR, otherwise known as Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, is a life-saving, emergency procedure used when someone’s heart has stopped beating. The goal of CPR is to help circulate blood throughout the body.

Traditional CPR is performed by a combination of chest compressions and artificial ventilation (rescue breaths).

Makes Sense. So What’s the Difference?

The difference between hands-only CPR and traditional or “mouth-to-mouth” CPR is that hands-only CPR eliminates rescue breaths.

The good news is if you see a teen or adult collapse, hands-only CPR is just as effective as traditional CPR for the first few minutes. And, it’s easier to learn and remember.

Why is it important for me to learn?

Hands-only CPR is important to learn because it can help you save a life!

It can be scary to witness someone as their heart stops beating. Because hands-only CPR is much easier to do, and in many cases, just as effective, it can increase the likelihood of survival.
