  • The link to complete the online portion of the training is sent to you from the American Red Cross Learning Center, within 24 hours of your registration. Please complete the online portion before your training. Your completion record must be attached to the form above prior to the in-person session. If you're having trouble finding the email from Red Cross, please note: the sender is likely to be "Salesforce Automation" and it may be found in spam.

American (Red Cross) estimates that the online portion should take about 2 hours, 30 minutes. Our experience is that it may take longer than that. We recommend planning for the online learning to take 5 hours. Paying close attention to all details instead of just skipping through each section is very much advised. It may be tempting to not pay attention. Please don’t make this mistake!

  • The standard Red Cross Instructor Candidate requirement is “an Adult CPR/AED (or higher-level) from the American Red Cross or an equivalent organization”. Purple’s requirement exceeds that standard. Why? In our experience as one of the primary Instructor Training Providers in the Mid-Atlantic region, we found the following.

    • The first part of the Instructor Training is a “Pre-Course” Skill Session. Candidates are required to demonstrate instructor-level skills during that time to qualify to move to Instructor Training. This is why we often have students come to our Instructor Training after spending over $300 for another training program and being sent away for not having adequate skills.

    • Higher-level certificates such as BLS, while awesome, do not adequately prepare Instructor Candidates to successfully teach this specific class. For example, while the information is similar in say a BLS class, there are substantial content differences. Also, a BLS class does not prepare an Instructor Candidate to teach the First Aid portion of the class.

    • Also, trainees with older versions of the Red Cross’s Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED certificate are often unable to successfully participate as they are not aware of the changes and updates.

    • Instructor candidates often struggle through the training Pre-Course Skills session and conducting Practice Teaching Assignments when they have not taken a Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED training session within the past month. It’s honestly difficult to fully remember information that you don’t use on a regular basis.

We aim to go way above and beyond to set you up for success! That’s why we’ve created this portal to help you prepare. And it’s also why we require all Red Cross Instructor Candidates to have the R.21 First Aid CPR AED Certification within one month of their scheduled instructor training session.

Purple requires all Instructor Candidates to have the Red Cross R.21 Adult and Pediatric First Aid CPR AED Certification.

The following Instructor Candidates need to complete a new R.21 First Aid CPR AED Certification to meet this requirement:

    • Candidates who are not CPR certified

    • Those who have a CPR/AED or higher certificate from an equivalent organization (such as AHA or ASHI)

    • Those who have a non-qualified online-only certification (such as National CPR Foundation or ProCPR)

    • Trainees with older versions of the Red Cross First Aid CPR AED certificate (not R.21)

    • Candidates who received their Red Cross R.21 Adult & Ped. First Aid CPR AED Certification more than 6 months before the scheduled Instructor Training In-Person Session

Candidates can get a new R.21 Adult & Ped. First Aid CPR AED Certification through any Licensed Training Provider. For a convenient and budget-friendly option, Purple offers Hybrid training at the beginning of each Instructor Training class. Our low price, exclusive to Instructor candidates is $59. It’s very convenient because you just have to show up for your Instructor Training and we’ll get you trained and certified. Get it here!

Candidates who received their Red Cross R.21 Adult & Ped. First Aid CPR AED Certification between 1 and 6 months prior to their scheduled Instructor Training Session will only need to complete the self-paced online portion as a refresher. Get access to the online portion for $19.95 here.

  • All of your training materials must be downloaded and/or printed by you. Purple Health and Safety is not responsible for preparing or providing your materials. Please note that PRIOR to the start of each training session, Purple is required to verify that you do have all the materials either downloaded and/or printed.

There are 3 options for accessing materials during the training session:

    1) You may bring a tablet or laptop with you with all materials downloaded, organized, and readily accessible during the training session.

    2) You may bring physical copies of all required materials and resources. Some are available for purchase from Red Cross (be sure to leave time for shipping if you choose this option). Some materials are not available for purchase and will instead need to be printed.

All items must be organized in such a way that allows for quick access during training.

    3) If you do not have a device to use during your training session, we can provide one for you to use during the class with all the course materials downloaded.

You will still need to access all materials ON YOUR OWN PRIOR TO THE TRAINING SESSION in order to prepare ahead of time. Laptop rental is available for $20 per class.

Please take care to go through all the information carefully and thoroughly. Everything you need is all there - promise 😊. We appreciate your participation in this as we go to great lengths to help as much as we can via this Training Guide.

We want you to be empowered to prepare for and participate in training. That’s why we provide plenty of information ahead of time, far beyond any other training organization. Since we custom-create these portals for each training session with all training information, we have limited phone attendants. That keeps our prices budget-friendly!

Still, you may want to hear our friendly voices or get extra help preparing for your training session. Candidates may schedule a 10-minute phone or Zoom consultation call with a member of our Instructor Candidate Success team for $25. We’re happy to help! Schedule a consultation here.

  • Before Instructor Training can begin, the following must be verified:

    • Must be 16 years old

    • Must possess an American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED r.21 Certificate

    • Must have all required course materials in digital or physical format. See the RESOURCES AND INFORMATION section.

    • Each candidate must have successfully completed the online Introduction to the American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor Course.

Perquisites can be verified using the Verification Form found in your initial confirmation email.

As an alternative to using the form, in-person perquisite verification is available 30 minutes prior to the start of your scheduled Instructor Training. For $20, an instructor will manually verify and submit all prerequisites for you!! Find the link to purchase in your initial confirmation email.

  • Your training location, date, and time information can be found in the email confirmation you received immediately after registration.

The arrival window is as much as 10 minutes early. In order to participate in the in-person portion of training, instructor trainees must arrive on time! Participants who arrive late will not be admitted into the training session.

We certainly understand that things happen, and unforeseen circumstances arise. We empathize. However, the American Red Cross requires us to ensure instructor candidates participate in 100% of the training. Purple is not allowed to certify students who do not participate fully in the entire session.

  • The In-Person Session is broken into two parts. The first is a pre-course skill session. During the pre-course skill session, Red Cross requires the demonstration of INSTRUCTOR-LEVEL hands-on skills for CPR, use of an AED, choking relief, and caring for life-threatening bleeding. Candidates that do not demonstrate INSTRUCTOR-LEVEL skills (top-notch) will not qualify to move to the next portion of the in-person training.

The second portion of the In-Person Session is Instructor Training. During this portion, candidates are expected to participate fully and to deliver 3 practice teaching assignments.
